Is the place to download map tiles, down to street level, in a zip file by county, state or region.
Not as far as I know. However, if you download map tiles on one machine, you can simply copy the resultant directory tree onto another machine as long as you have the tile set configured to point to the proper directory root.
Oh, and I should say that APRSISCE/32 doesn't do it's own maps, but is a map tile client accessing OpenStreetMap-compatible tile servers to get map tiles for caching and display. See also http://aprsisce.wikidot.com/tile-sets
The web-site GeoFabrik has files by state. Which format, if any, should I download?
As stated at the wiki page mentioned above, APRSISCE/32 only supports OSM-compatible map tiles named the same as they name them. Check the directory tree for one of your map tile sets and you'll see the files that need to be available for the maps to be displayed by APRSISCE/32. I suspect that GeoFabrik doesn't support that particular format in their downloads.
The Geofabrik maps are OSM. They just allow you to pull maps by geographical area or they have already done so. They list a few different compressed files to download, I just couldn't figure while one I needed for the selected state.
Geofabrik maps are OSM data, not OSM-compatible map tile. They offer downloads of the raw OSM data (extracted, so you don't have to download the entire planet) and shapefiles. The OMS data is what you'd feed into a map server that would render tiles from that data. Shapefiles are supported by some mapping software, but not APRSISCE/32.
Hi I know this is an old post but this is the only one that i have found that is close to what I need info on. I am running a tm-d710 with a placer 455 gps tied into to a motorola mw800 computer in my truck. Is it possible to use the map tiles that I have allready downloaded from osm on my computer. I travel to remote ares that do not have internet connections even byway of cell phone so the ability to use maps offline stored on the computer would be of great help to me. I use sartrak but that dose not work for mobile operations it is intended for fixed position operation and that is fine for the base location. But for the people in the field we we need to have the ability see the station close to us. We do not need to know all the aprs traffic within 100 miles just the ones that are close to us in the field.
This is actually a better question to ask in the APRSISCE Yahoo group, at least I assume that you're planning to run APRSISCE/32 on the computer?
Is "my computer" which already has downloaded tiles different than the "motorola mw800 computer" in the truck?
If you repost this question to the APRSISCE Yahoo group with those clarifications, I'm sure we can get you going in the proper direction.
Thanks for the reply. Yes I am running aprsisce/32 on my computer and no it is not a different computer. the motorola mw800 has all the map tiles on it with aprsisce/32 running on it. It also has direwolf and all the software to control the radios for packet. If any other software needs to be loaded that is not a problem I can do that easily. Its just that I need to be able to point aprsisce to the directory that has the osm map tiles and not have it try to connect to osm server.
Just disable map purging on your tile set and you should be good.
To prevent trying to access the Internet for new tiles, unceck Enables / Internet Access. Note that this will also kill the APRS-IS connection.
